A few fabric scraps, a little stuffing, and some string are all you need to create an adorable ghost garland for Halloween! This no-sew project is easy to make and a great way to use what you already have at home.

Hang it in front of a window, above a shelf, across a sideboard, or along a wall to add a playful touch to your fall décor.

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric scraps: one 25 × 25 cm (approximately 10 × 10 in) square per ghost
  • Polyester stuffing or another material to shape the heads
  • String to tie beneath each head and hang the ghosts
  • A fabric marker to draw the eyes
  • Fabric scissors
  • A needle with an eye large enough for your string
  • A rule

Don’t have any stuffing on hand? You can use a Styrofoam ball, crumpled aluminum foil, or small fabric scraps. The idea is simply to form a ball that will give your ghost’s head its shape.

How to Make Your Ghost Garland

1. Cut Your Fabric Squares

Cut your fabric into 25 × 25 cm (approximately 10 × 10 in) squares, using one square per ghost.

You can also vary the sizes to create a family of little and big ghosts.

2. Add the Stuffing

Lay your fabric square flat with the wrong side facing up. Place a ball of stuffing in the centre.

Adjust the amount to get the head size you want, leaving enough loose fabric to form the ghost’s body.

3. Shape Your Ghost

Gather the fabric around the ball, then lift it while holding the fabric just below the head. Adjust the folds to create a rounded head, letting the corners hang down.

4. Tie Beneath the Head

Wrap a short piece of string around the fabric just below the ball, then tie a secure knot to hold the stuffing in place.

5. Trim the ends of the tie

Trim the ends or tie them into a little bow for an extra decorative touch.

6. Draw the Eyes

Use your fabric marker to draw two eyes on each ghost.

7. Thread Your Ghost onto the String

Cut a piece of string to your desired garland length, leaving extra at both ends for hanging.

Using your needle, thread the string through the fabric at the top of the head. Check that your ghost hangs securely.

8. Repeat as Many Times as You Like!

Make as many ghosts as you wish and thread them onto the same string. Space them out however you like, then hang up your creation!

Make It Your Own with Fabric Scraps

Choose plain fabric for a classic look. For a garland full of personality, try small prints or a mix of textures. Lightweight cotton will give your ghosts a lovely drape.
